What is young adult ministry?

I have had several people ask me, “What is young adult ministry?”

Weeks ago, I concluded our summer camps, sent off our seniors and handed off middle school ministry. It felt good to conclude these things, celebrating success and being proud of our accomplishments.

Then came time to sit down and try to answer this question. “What is young adult ministry?” When I looked at the blank page, it was intimidating but freeing. It meant there was no answer to that question, but we got to figure it out ourselves.

Although many of these plans are still being written in pencil and figured out for the future, we are taking steps to make our young adult ministry thriving and fun!

WHAT IS IT?

Young adult ministry is for those 18-30. Where high school life is typically similar from person to person, Young Adult Ministry contains multitudes: people in college, people that are married, people with kids, single people, people switching careers, those that live at home, and those buying a home. How do you reach such a range?

GROUPS

We don’t want to create 13th grade, no one wants that. That’s why much of my work in the Young Adult Ministry will partner with our Small Group Ministry.

We hope to train up young adults to lead one another. My role is to help foster these groups to be healthy, successful, and fun! No one wants to go to a group that isn’t life-giving. This also helps us create groups for the myriad of life stages between 18-30.

We are in the process of developing a crash course in leading groups. We have more young adults than we have space in one living room. We hope to train up people this fall and winter in a class that gives you all the tools and wisdom you need to begin leading a group of peers.

Group sign-ups are available on our website at wcchurch.life/groups.

Sign-ups for leader training will be forthcoming.

GATHERINGS

I know what you’re thinking: “But how do I meet people? I don’t want to blind date a small group and hope for the best.” Agreed, so how do we meet people before spending time week-to-week or month-to-month with them?
We’ll have gatherings open to all young adults. These gatherings have two goals: meet some people and have fun!

Here are two gatherings coming this fall when we’d love to meet up with you!

  • AM Tailgate • Saturday, October 1 • 10a-12p at WCC

Before college football starts for the day, come tailgate at the church! Join us for Flag Football, cornhole, and more! We’ll have food and drinks; grab a coffee and a donut to start the day or a hotdog and Coke for lunch!

  • Young Adult Game Night • Saturday, October 26 • 6-9p in the Venue

Do you enjoy beating your friends in games like Settlers of Catan, 7 Wonders, or Scythe? Do you like feeling nostalgic and playing Sorry, Scrabble, or Monopoly? Are you good at cooperating with teammates in Pandemic? Do you like learning crazy games that remind you of The Cones of Dunshire?

We are taking over the Venue for a big night of board games! Bring a friend and your favorite game. We will have several tables of games going and chances to mix it up game to game!

There are even more events to come. If you’d like to receive updates about Young Adult Ministry gatherings, click here.
